Conjunction แปลว่า "สันธาน" หมายถึง "คำ ที่ใช้เชื่อมคำ (Words) กลุ่มคำ (Phrases) หรือประโยค (Sentences) เข้าด้วยกัน และคำที่จะใช้ conjunction เชื่อมได้นั้นต้องเป็นคำชนิดเดียวกัน หรือคล้ายคลึงกัน"

ชนิดของ Conjunctions1. Co-ordinate Conjunctions ได้แก่ "สันธานที่เชื่อมลงไปแล้ว ทำให้ความนั้นเป็น Compound Sentence" แบ่งตามลักษณะของคำและการใช้ได้ 4 ชนิด คือ

1. And และคำอื่นซึ่งมีความหมายคล้าย and
2. But และคำอื่นซึ่งมีความหมายคล้าย but
3. Or และคำอื่นซึ่งมีความหมายคล้าย or
4. So และคำอื่นซึ่งมีความหมายคล้าย so

2. Subordinate Conjunctions ได้แก่ "สันธานที่เชื่อมลงไปแล้ว ทำให้ประโยคนั้นเป็น Complex Sentence"

ส่วนที่ Subordinate conjunctions แตกต่างจาก Co-ordinate Conjunctions ก็คือ Subordinate Conjunctions ไม่จำเป็นที่จะต้องอยู่กลางประโยคเหมือน Co-ordinate Conjunction แต่อาจวางไว้ข้างหน้าประโยคก็ได้ เช่น

If you want me, I will come.

Subordinate Conjunctions ที่ใช้มากมีดังต่อไปนี้

if	after	since	because
unless	as	which	although (though)
lest	as soon as	as...as	whether etc.

so that, so.....that, lest	supposing	inasmuch as
such.....that	since	either of, neither of
in order to, so as to	as soon as	or, or else
in order that	in case	no sooner.....than
as long as, so long as	because, because of	till, until
if, unless, but that	the same.....as	not so.....as
